We are always asked to help make comparisons for people trying to choose viola strings and to assist them in comparing what they have already tried and what they were interested in or thinking of buying next for their viola. With all the brands by Pirastro, Thomastik etc…, it can be a little intimidating if not more than a little confusing. So, while the cost can sometimes dictate what is available, there are trends and close comparisons between manufacturers. (They tend to copy or ‘closely assimulate’ the other competing brand’s formula when the other has a new, popular string out. Sometimes, as soon as their is a new technology in the string business, several of the leading makers will come up with their own version. As a viola player, this is great because it is extremely difficult for anyone to exactly copy a string (if not illegal), and so the comparable string can be a nice alternative that will of course match your viola more than the other.
Sometimes there are close comparisons within brands that just improve or change the older version enough that it makes sense to keep both, old and new as alternative choices. A classic example is the newer Evah Pirazzi strings and the older Obligatos. Similar, but different. You can read more about these two at the Evah Pirazzi Viola page we have. In general, Evahs tend to be brighter and more responsive.
Another close comparison to the Evahs, are Thomastik’s Dominants. Same kind of technology but a little different. Dominants tend to respond closely to the Evahs. Most players that use the Dominants like to substitute the Dominant A string with the Larsen.
Spirocores. Spirocores are made by Thomastik-Infeld (Austria). They’re Spirocore C and G strings are punchy, loud and big sounding. While they can tend to be bright while new, they settle in a bit once they are played in and in general, they are the most powerful C and G. This also holds true for cellos in that they are definitely the most popular (and most expensive) C & G strings available.
The most favorite viola set of strings (for sure) is Spirocore medium C, G and Larsen A and D strings. While they are the most purchased viola sets, they are not cheap either. See our combination viola sets page for a stunning price on these as well. We’re the best!
