Dominant Viola
Strings
Dominant Viola strings, are still very popular
throughout the
world. They have a synthetic nylon core that has all the
wonderful attributes of a gut core, but will last much longer and will
not break down like gut strings. The C,G and D strings are all
silver wrapped, while the A is aluminum. While the (#141's) come in the
usual 3 gauges, of weich (light), medium or heavy, the most popular
weight and tension are the mediums. They are warm and
very responsive and also well known for
uniformity of sound response and evenness across all the strings.
Players also say they notice less 'timbre' difference when comparing
same pitch on neighboring string.
How to order (the correct) string lengths on the Dominant Viola
strings:
Thomastik almost gives too many choices for string lengths!
Like the
upright bass, the viola comes in all sizes and shapes.
Measuring and knowing the size of the back is usually all that one
needs, but again, because of differing makes of instruments, we offer
all that Thomastik offers in size and string lengths.
How to measure your viola:
Measuring the back: First, take a measuring tape to the middle
seam of the back, measuring the top edge (right next to the neck)
all the way down the middle seam of the back to the bottom of the
edge.
String Length: This is the measurement of the vibrating
string length of your viola. Measure the distance from the nut
(near the scroll) all the way down the string to the tip of the
bridge.
Thomastik offers 6 (!) different lengths. The most often
ordered sets are #141 because they fit most all violas. We
offer the 141 size in medium, light and heavy gauge.
- 141.12 is for 1/2 sized violas, with a back of 13"
and smaller and a string length of 12 1/2"
- 141.34 is for 3/4 sized violas, with a back of 14-15" in
length and the string length of 13 1/2"
- 141 (most often ordered), size for 15-16 1/3" back length
and/or string length of 14 1/2"
- 4123 is for backs, 16 1/3-16.5", and vibrating string
length 15-15 1/2"
- 4125 is for backs, 16.5-17", and the vibrating string
length of 15.5-16"
- 4121 is for backs 17"+, vibrating string length of 16.5+
(chiropractor fees not included!)
